Sun-ripened fruit from your own garden: choosing peach and nectarine trees

Nothing compares to a warm, juicy fruit picked straight from the branch. With the right tree, a sunny terrace or a small garden is enough to enjoy it. Here you can find peach and nectarine trees grown in containers, which are easy to plant and ready to settle into your garden. For a fast start, pick a ready fruit tree collection that brings several stone fruit trees together in a single order. Browse our peach trees for sale and pick the form that fits your space.

Types of peach trees

When you compare varieties, start with the colour of the flesh. A yellow peach has a rich, classic flavour with a balance of sweetness and acidity. A white peach is usually softer and more delicate, with a floral aroma and low acidity.

Shape is the next choice. A flat peach, often sold as a donut peach tree, bears small, squat fruit with sweet flesh and a tiny stone. It is popular with families because the fruit is easy to eat and the harvest is very aromatic.

If you prefer smooth skin, look at a nectarine tree for sale. A nectarine is closely related to the peach and differs mainly in its glossy skin without fuzz. Nectarine trees need the same site and the same care as peaches, so you can combine both in one planting.

Finally, check how the stone behaves. In freestone fruit the flesh comes away from the stone easily, which is perfect for eating fresh and for preserving. With clingstone fruit, the flesh stays attached to the stone, and such peaches are often very sweet with a firm texture.

One tree is enough

Peaches are self fertile, and most trees are also self pollinating, so a single tree will give you fruit without a partner. Two trees can raise the yield, because better cross pollination often means a heavier crop. For a small plot, one well-placed tree is a good start.

Growing peach trees in the garden and in pots

Peach tree care begins with the site. Choose the sunniest spot you have and protect it from the cold wind. The blossom appears early, so a late frost in spring is the main risk. A wall facing south or a sheltered corner helps, and a light fleece covering on cold nights saves the flowers. Look for a cold hardy tree if your winters are hard.

Watch for peach leaf curl, a fungus that twists and reddens young leaves. Prevention works best. Keep the tree dry in spring, for example under a rain cover, and remove affected leaves early.

Regular pruning peach trees keeps them productive. Shape the crown in an open vase form in winter or early spring, with three or four main branches and an airy centre. Later, thin the young fruit so that those left grow larger and sweeter.

A potted peach tree is ideal for a patio. Use a large container peach tree pot with drainage holes, good soil and regular watering and feeding. A peach tree in a pot also lets you move it to a sheltered place when frost is forecast.
