Berries by the handful: a simple guide to choosing strawberry plants for your garden

Few fruits are as easy to love as a sun-warmed berry picked right at the bed. Our selection includes garden and woodland plants sold one by one, so you can create a patch of exactly the size you want. Berries come in the classic red, but also in paler and more unusual shades. Explore our strawberry plants for sale and pick the type that suits your garden space, your flavour preferences and your planting schedule.

Types of strawberry plants

When you compare types of strawberry plants, start with the way they fruit. June bearing strawberry plants give one generous crop at the start of summer. The berries ripen almost together, which is ideal for jam, freezing and big family harvests. They also send out many runners, so they quickly fill a bed.

Everbearing strawberry plants fruit in waves from early summer until autumn. A day neutral plant is similar, but it is less sensitive to day length and keeps producing steadily through the warm season. Both groups make fewer runners, which means they put more energy into berries and stay tidy. For this reason they are a popular choice for potted strawberry plants and strawberry plants in containers.

All of these are perennial strawberry plants, so one planting will serve you for several seasons. If you are not sure where to begin, our starter plants are an easy way to try different varieties side by side.

White and unusual strawberries

If you like surprises, try white strawberry plants. Their berries are pale cream or pinkish white, often with red seeds, and they taste sweet with a light pineapple or caramel note. They smell lovely and look striking on a plate. Birds also tend to ignore pale fruit, so more of the harvest stays for you.

Other rare strawberry plants bear berries in yellow, deep burgundy or other uncommon shades. They look decorative in a bed, along a path or in a pot on the terrace, and they make a good talking point at any table. Many gardeners also enjoy heirloom strawberry plants for their old fashioned flavour and character.

Alpine and wild strawberry plants

Alpine strawberry plants and wild strawberry plants come from Fragaria vesca, also known as the woodland strawberry. The alpine strawberry bears small, intensely fragrant berries all summer long. The flavour is far richer than their size suggests, and many people compare it to a dessert.

These plants make few runners or none at all, so they grow in neat clumps. They are happy in partial shade, where other fruit struggles. Use them as an edging along a path, as a ground cover under shrubs, or in pots and hanging baskets where the berries are easy to reach.

Planting and care in short

Good strawberry plant care is simple. Plant in spring or in late summer, and set each plant so that the crown, the heart of the rosette, sits level with the soil. Do not bury it, and do not leave the roots exposed. Leave 30 to 40 cm between plants, spread a layer of mulch to keep berries clean and the soil moist, and water regularly in dry weather. Renew the bed every 3 to 4 years for the best crops. For a full guide, see our blog.

Common mistakes to avoid

Most disappointments with new plants come from a few small errors. Do not plant too deep, because a buried crown can rot, and do not set it too high, because the roots will dry out. Do not plant too closely, because weak air circulation encourages grey mould. Remove the first flowers in June bearing plants in the planting year, so the young plant builds strong roots.
