Agapanthus "Dr. Brouwer" is a spectacular plant. A herbaceous perennial. Common names: African or Nile Lily, or Abyssinian beauty. It grows wild in South Africa along the seacoast and on dry slopes. This plant grows up to 90 cm tall. It has a short creeping rhizome with thick, fleshy roots. The leaves are long, linear, strap-like, gathered in a dense basal rosette. The flower stalk is tall (70-90 cm), strong, bearing a large spherical umbrella-shaped inflorescence. The inflorescence blooms in late summer. It consists of a large number (20-30 pieces) of funnel-shaped light purple-blue flowers with dark blue stripes in the middle of the petal. The size of the inflorescence is striking – it reaches up to 30 cm in diameter. The flowers open gradually, so the blooming of agapanthus can be admired for up to two months. Seeds ripen in 35-40 days. Agapanthus needs full sun and moist, well-drained soils. The location should be well protected from winds. In case of insufficient light, the plant refuses to bloom. It looks very good in borders, flower beds, and also in containers. Exposure – South-East and West. A heat-loving plant. Frost resistance is low: it can withstand only –5°C. For winter, the plant is carefully dug up, trying not to damage the roots. Store the plant until spring in a cool, warm room.
