Berberis thunbergii "Atropurpurea Nana" is a compact ornamental shrub with a dense, rounded crown and striking purple-red foliage. Thanks to its small size and rich coloration, this cultivar is perfect for borders, rockeries, small flowerbeds, and contrasting garden compositions.

The main adornment of the plant is its numerous small, rounded leaves of a rich burgundy-purple, red, or dark red hue. Young shoots are usually brighter, and in autumn, the foliage takes on expressive red-crimson tones. The color is most intense in sunny areas.

The shrub forms a dense, compact, rounded crown with numerous branched shoots. It grows slowly. An adult plant usually reaches about 40–60 cm in height and 60–100 cm in width, thus maintaining a neat shape for a long time and practically not requiring regular shaping pruning.

In May, small yellow or yellow-red flowers appear on the plant. After flowering, oblong bright red fruits form, which can persist on the branches for a long time, further decorating the shrub in autumn.

For planting, it is best to choose a sunny location or light partial shade. In the sun, the purple color of the leaves appears especially vivid. Barberry is undemanding regarding soil composition but prefers well-drained soil without prolonged water stagnation. After rooting, it tolerates short droughts quite well.

"Atropurpurea Nana" is characterized by high frost resistance, unpretentiousness, and good resistance to urban conditions. Its compactness allows it to be used both in single plantings and in groups for creating low decorative borders.
