Berberis x frikartii "Telstar" - is a striking ornamental shrub with a dense, spreading crown, shiny dark green foliage, and abundant bright yellow blooms. The plant maintains an attractive appearance for most of the year and is perfectly suited for solitary plantings, decorative groups, and creating low hedges.
The bush forms numerous densely branched shoots with thorns. The leaves are small, leathery, shiny, and a rich dark green color. In mild climates, the plant retains a significant portion of its foliage in winter, thus being considered evergreen or semi-evergreen.
"Telstar" is especially decorative during flowering. In spring, the branches are covered with numerous bright yellow flowers, which beautifully stand out against the dark glossy foliage. The main flowering period is April–May.
A mature plant typically reaches about 1–1.5 m in height and 1–1.5 m in width. The crown is dense, compact, and rounded-spreading. The bush tolerates formative pruning well, so its size and shape can be easily controlled if necessary.
For planting, it is recommended to choose a sunny spot or light partial shade. Barberry prefers moderately moist, fertile, and well-drained soils. After good rooting, it can tolerate short dry periods. Stagnant water near the roots should preferably be avoided.
Berberis × frikartii "Telstar" looks effective next to conifers, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials. Thanks to its dense crown and thorny branches, this variety is also suitable for creating decorative protective plantings.
