Description

Berberis x media "Red Jewel" - is a striking ornamental shrub with a dense, spreading crown and unusual foliage coloration. The variety is especially valued for its combination of burgundy, purple, and reddish-brown hues that change throughout the season. The plant maintains its appeal from spring to late autumn and is well-suited for creating vibrant contrasting compositions.

The bush forms numerous densely arranged thorny shoots and gradually acquires a rounded, spreading shape. The leaves are small, glossy, and dense. Young foliage stands out with rich red-purple shades, later becoming darker, with burgundy and bronze-green tones. In mild climates, some leaves may persist through winter.

In spring, small yellow flowers appear on the shoots, effectively contrasting with the dark foliage. The main flowering period is in May. After flowering, small decorative berries may form.

A mature Berberis × media «Red Jewel» typically reaches about 1–1.5 m in height and roughly the same width. The crown is dense, rounded, becoming more spreading over time. The plant tolerates pruning well, making it easy to maintain at the desired size.

To achieve the most intense foliage coloration, it is recommended to choose a sunny location or light partial shade. Barberry is not demanding regarding soil but thrives best in moderately moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. Prolonged water stagnation should be avoided.

«Red Jewel» looks good in solitary and group plantings, low hedges, rock gardens, and mixed compositions. Its dark red-purple foliage contrasts particularly strikingly with golden and blue conifers, ornamental grasses, and light green shrubs.
