Clematis "Ernest Markham" is a variety developed by English breeders, attracting the attention of florists with its spectacular and vibrant large flowers that delight the eye for 3 months. It belongs to pruning group 3 – strong and forms beautiful red buds with a velvety texture and creamy-brown stamens on current year's shoots. Gardeners choose the pruning period themselves – autumn (October) or early spring – March-April. The bush shows its decorativeness well in sunny exposure, requiring shading of the root zone. It handles decorating retaining walls, gazebos, pergolas well. It can also climb independently on natural supports, creating a natural landscape. The plant also looks great in a barrel, performing a decorative function in the most hard-to-reach areas of the plot. It is widely used in all climatic zones of Ukraine; the bush withstands frosts down to -34 degrees. Planting. Clematis are used for vertical landscaping of house walls, fences, gazebos, and arches. Low-growing varieties are used in rock gardens. Clematis likes to keep its head in the sun and its feet in the shade. For clematis, use a soil mixture of sod soil, compost or manure; peat; sand, 3:1:1. Dig a hole, make a mound in the center, place the plant, spread out the roots, water well. The planting depth is very important for clematis: deepen the root collar by 7-10 cm. With deep planting, clematis will easily endure frosty winters, thanks to a strong root system that will form over the summer. Mulch the soil around the plant. Care. Supports are of great importance for the full development, abundant and prolonged flowering of plants. Wooden trellises, tightly stretched nets made of durable fishing line, as well as bushes of weigela, corydalis, forsythia are suitable for this purpose. Clematis care involves protection from overheating and drying out in summer and freezing in winter. During the growing season, alternate with the application of mineral and organic fertilizers. Before covering for the winter, the bushes are cleaned of old leaves and pruned.
