Description
Clematis "Snow Queen" is a climbing plant with moderate growth vigor, reaching up to 3 m in height. It attaches to supports using leaf petioles (a climbing vine). The leaves are green, oval-shaped, complex trifoliate, or sometimes single.
The first very abundant flowering of Snow Queen occurs on last year's shoots already in May. The flowers on second-year shoots are large, 16 cm in diameter, simple, consisting of 6-8 sepals with a slightly ruffled edge. The color of the petals is snow-white with a slight violet tint at the beginning of flowering, later the petals become pure white. The center of the flower is a contrasting dark: a bundle of stamens with purple-brown anthers on pale yellow filaments.
The second flowering on young vines occurs in August, less abundantly with flowers of the same color, but smaller in size. To stimulate re-flowering, it is recommended to shorten the faded shoots by approximately 1/3 of their length.
Planting, care, and recommendations for growing Clematis Snow Queen
It grows and blooms ideally in rich, well-drained soils, in full sun or partial shade.
Clematis do not like stagnant moisture; watering is best done infrequently but abundantly.
Fertilize clematis in early spring when buds swell and new growths begin to appear. A second feeding is needed after the first wave of flowering to stimulate re-flowering.
It is recommended to shade or mulch the soil at the base of the clematis bush, primarily to prevent soil overheating. For the same purpose, groundcovers or other plants with a superficial root system (e.g., geraniums) can be planted.
In the first year, it is recommended to prune all clematis, regardless of pruning group and flowering time, no higher than 30 cm from the soil to stimulate the emergence of new shoots from the base of the bush. Subsequently, since Clematis 'Snow Queen' belongs to pruning group 2, in spring (February-March) it is sufficient to remove dead shoots and prune living ones: in the second year – to 70 cm, and in subsequent years at a height of 150 cm (the smaller and weaker the plant, the lower the pruning).
Frost resistance is good; mature plants do not need winter cover.
