Description
Crocus flavus "Golden Yellow" is a perennial, low-growing herbaceous corm plant. The corms are flattened-spherical, 4-6 cm in diameter, covered with a membranous tunic that splits into vertical fibers (not breaking into horizontal rings). Leaves are narrow, developing during flowering. The perianth is goblet-shaped with large flowers 4-5 cm in diameter. The perianth segments are rich yellow, the center is dark yellow, and the outer segments have translucent bronze stripes starting from the floral tube. Anthers and pistil stigmas are yellow. The floral tube is up to 10-12 cm long. Flowering occurs in early spring (March). Flowering duration is 20 days. It belongs to the ephemeroids – it enters summer dormancy. Divide clumps every 3-4 years in autumn.
Planting
Planting. Soils for planting can be any, but they must be well-drained. Crocuses do not grow in acidic soils. Choose a sunny or semi-shady location for planting. Crocuses look great in groups in borders, rock gardens, and on lawns. You can create whimsical patterns with them. Crocus corms are planted from September to December. Prepare the soil for planting in advance. Loosen it to a depth of 30 cm, then add compost. Since bulbous plants are too sensitive to moisture, they can be planted in sand. To do this, dig a hole with a flat bottom, for example, 5 cm wide and 30 cm long. Then spread a thin layer of sand, no more than 2 cm high, around the entire perimeter. Place the corms on top of the sand, with the pointed ends facing up. Then carefully fill the hole with soil, without compacting it. Planting depth should be equal to two times the height of the corm. The planting distance between corms is 3 to 10 cm.
Care. Crocuses are undemanding in care. They do not need watering. They get enough moisture from the soil after the snow melts. Fresh manure is contraindicated for crocuses. Every 4-5 years, crocus "nests" (clumps) need to be divided. If necessary, flowering crocuses can be transplanted (with a clod of earth).
