Description

Euonymus japonicus - is an ornamental evergreen shrub with a dense crown and attractive glossy foliage. The plant is valued for its neat appearance, good tolerance to shaping pruning, and ability to maintain decorativeness year-round. It is suitable for single and group plantings, borders, hedges, and garden compositions.

The main decoration of the plant is its dense, leathery, glossy oval-shaped leaves. In the main species form, they are a rich dark green color. There are also numerous decorative varieties with golden, yellow-green, or white-green variegated coloration.

Euonymus forms a dense, well-branched shrub with vertically directed shoots. Without regular trimming, a mature plant usually reaches about 1.5–3 m in height and 1–2 m in width. It tolerates pruning well, so it is easy to maintain it in a more compact form or use it for creating geometric garden shapes and hedges.

In May–June, small greenish-white flowers appear. They are inconspicuous and are not the main decorative advantage of the plant — the main appeal of Euonymus is provided by its dense evergreen foliage.

A sunny spot or partial shade is suitable for planting. Variegated varieties should preferably be placed in sufficiently lit areas, as their coloration becomes less expressive with insufficient light. The plant prefers fertile, moderately moist, and well-drained soil.

Moderate watering is required. Young plants after planting need to be watered regularly, preventing prolonged drying out of the soil. At the same time, waterlogging near the roots is undesirable.

Euonymus japonicus looks especially good in formal gardens, near terraces and paths, in decorative groups with conifers and flowering shrubs. Thanks to its dense crown and good tolerance to pruning, the plant is suitable for forming borders, hedges, and topiary shapes.
