Description

Gladiolus communis subsp. byzantinus is a perennial herbaceous corm-forming plant, a subspecies of the Common Gladiolus from the Iris family. The stem is slender and strong, growing up to 50 cm tall. The flowers are funnel-shaped, rich purple-pink or crimson with a characteristic white stripe in the center of the lower petals. Unlike many garden hybrids, it blooms earlier – in late spring or early summer (May-June).

It is considered one of the most resilient and undemanding species. In regions with mild climates, the corms can overwinter in the ground under cover. It prefers open, sunny areas with well-drained, light soil. Ideal for creating natural gardens, mixed borders, and rockeries.
