Description
Ribes uva-crispa "Captivator" - a Canadian gooseberry variety that stands out for its almost complete lack of thorns, high frost resistance, and sweet, dark red fruits. The shoots are almost thornless: only at the base can some soft prickles be found, which makes harvesting significantly easier.
When fully ripe, the fruits acquire a rich red-purple color and have a pleasant sweet dessert taste. A mature bush usually reaches 1.2–1.5 m in height and about the same width. The variety is characterized by good resistance to powdery mildew and low winter temperatures.
‘Captivator’ is a self-fertile variety and can yield a harvest without an additional pollinator; however, planting other gooseberry varieties nearby can contribute to more abundant fruiting.
For cultivation, it is best to choose sunny areas or light partial shade. Gooseberries prefer fertile, moderately moist, and well-drained soil. To maintain the health of the bush, good crown ventilation, and stable fruiting, it is recommended to perform sanitary and formative pruning in early spring or autumn.
