Description
Iris danfordiae is a species of dwarf bulbous perennial plant of the Iris family. It belongs to the reticulata group (Iridodictyum) and is known as one of the earliest flowering primroses, blooming in March-April immediately after the snow melts.
- Appearance: A miniature plant 10-20 cm high. It has single flowers, large for its size, about 5 cm in diameter.
- Color: Bright yellow petals with characteristic small green, brown, or olive speckles at the base and an orange longitudinal stripe. The flowers emit a light sweet fragrance.
- Growth features: Flowering lasts about 2 weeks. The thin grooved basal leaves fully develop and lengthen after the plant has finished blooming.
- Origin: In the wild, it grows in Turkey. The species was introduced into cultivation in 1876 by the English researcher Mrs. Charles Danford, in whose honor it was named.
The plant is highly frost-resistant and does not require annual digging up for winter. Its bulbs are planted in autumn. Thanks to its compactness and bright spring bloom, it is actively used for:
- Decorating alpine slides, rockeries, and rock gardens.
- Group planting in the foreground of spring flowerbeds next to crocuses and snowdrops.
- Growing in outdoor containers, planters, and for early spring forcing in pots.
