Japanese spindle 'Marieke' is a striking evergreen ornamental shrub with vibrant variegated foliage that remains attractive throughout the year. The contrasting combination of rich green and golden-yellow makes the plant a noticeable accent in the garden even when most other plants have finished blooming.
The main adornment of «Marieke» is its dense, leathery, and glossy leaves. Their central part is a rich dark green, while the edges are adorned with a distinctive golden-yellow or creamy-yellow margin. New growth is particularly vibrant, giving the bush a fresh, elegant appearance.
The plant forms a dense, compact, and well-branched bush. As an adult, it typically reaches about 60–100 cm in height, gradually spreading in width. The spindle tree tolerates shaping pruning very well, making it easy to maintain an neat form and use for creating low borders.
This variety thrives in sun and light partial shade. With sufficient light, the golden coloration of the leaves becomes particularly pronounced. It prefers fertile, loose, and well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Prolonged waterlogging around the roots should be avoided.
