Description
Vaccinium corymbosum is a perennial shrub of the Ericaceae family, reaching a height of 1.5–2.5 m. The plant forms a powerful upright bush with strong branched shoots and smooth oval dark green leaves, which turn bright red in autumn.
In May, blueberries bloom with small white or pinkish pitcher-shaped flowers, gathered in clusters. Later, large round berries ripen, with a diameter of up to 1.5–2 cm — blue, with a characteristic waxy bloom, thick skin, and sweet pulp.
For cultivation, blueberries require sunny areas protected from strong winds and light acidic soil with a pH of about 3.5–4.5. The plant prefers constant moderate moisture but tolerates waterlogging poorly. Highbush blueberry has become the basis for creating many popular varieties of garden blueberries.
