Description
Juniperus chinensis "Blue Alps" - is a striking evergreen coniferous shrub with a dense, spreading crown and expressive silvery-blue needles. The variety is valued for its unusual color, beautiful branch architecture, unpretentiousness, and high decorative appeal throughout the year. It is excellent for creating bright accents in coniferous and mixed garden compositions.
The plant's crown is wide, dense, and spreading. Strong shoots are directed upwards and outwards, and their tips are slightly raised, giving the shrub a picturesque, voluminous silhouette. The needles are dense, quite stiff and prickly, of a rich glaucous-blue or silvery-blue shade. The color is especially effectively displayed in well-lit areas.
"Blue Alps" is characterized by a moderate growth rate. An adult plant usually reaches about 2–3 m in height and 1.5–2 m in width. The shrub tolerates formative pruning well, so its size and shape can be adjusted if necessary.
For planting, it is recommended to choose a sunny spot or light partial shade. In full sun, the crown becomes denser, and the blue color of the needles becomes most intense. Juniper is undemanding regarding soil fertility, but it develops better on light, well-drained soils. It does not like prolonged water stagnation near the roots.
After rooting, the plant is quite drought-resistant and does not require frequent watering. Young seedlings should preferably be watered regularly during the initial period after planting. The variety has good frost resistance and is suitable for cultivation in the climatic conditions of Ukraine.
Juniperus chinensis "Blue Alps" looks spectacular in single plantings, rockeries, alpine gardens, and coniferous groups. The silvery-blue needles beautifully contrast with golden thujas, dark green coniferous plants, decorative stones, and flowering perennials.
