Description

Crocus tommasinianus "Whitewell Purple" — This is a spectacular botanical crocus with rich reddish-purple flowers, a light center, and bright golden-orange anthers. The elegant six-petaled flowers open on sunny days, taking on a beautiful star shape. Thanks to its early flowering, this variety becomes one of the first vibrant accents of the spring garden.

The plant reaches a height of about 10 cm, and the flower diameter is up to 5 cm. Narrow dark green leaves appear during flowering and fully develop after it ends. Flowering lasts about 20 days — from February to March. The variety is characterized by good frost resistance and does not require winter cover.

Tommasini's saffron or Tommasini's crocus blooms well before the awakening of Dutch hybrids. This plant is often called "Snow Crocus" for obvious reasons. It is a perennial ephemeroid plant and belongs to the Iris family. Other names for the species: Tommasini's saffron, Neapolitan saffron, Neapolitan crocus. This is one of the most cold-hardy crocuses! In the wild, it thrives in Hungary and the Balkan Peninsula. This crocus blooms in late winter - early spring for 3-4 weeks (and in May, it enters a dormant period).

Crocus Whitewell Purple requires spring sun to accumulate enough food and form a new flower by autumn. After the foliage has matured, shade is not a problem for the plant, so choose companions for the crocus carefully.
