Fresh plants from European nurseries
Description
Picea omorika "Karel" is a compact dwarf coniferous shrub with a dense, rounded or cushion-shaped crown. The variety is valued for its slow growth, neat natural form, and beautiful greenish-blue needles. Thanks to its small size, it is perfectly suited for small gardens, rockeries, alpine gardens, and coniferous compositions.
The crown is very dense, formed by numerous short shoots spreading in different directions. When young, the plant has an almost spherical shape, and with age, it becomes wider and slightly flattened. Formative pruning is usually not required.
The needles are short, dense, intensely green on the upper side, and have characteristic silvery-white stripes on the underside. Thanks to this, the bush acquires an attractive greenish-gray hue, especially noticeable in side lighting.
"Karel" grows slowly. An adult plant typically reaches about 0.6–0.8 m in height and 1–1.2 m in width, and older specimens under favorable conditions can approach 1 m in height. The annual growth is approximately 5–10 cm.
For planting, a sunny location or light partial shade is recommended. The spruce prefers moderately moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. Prolonged waterlogging near the roots should be avoided. Young plants after planting require regular watering, especially in hot and dry weather.
The variety is characterized by high frost resistance and is well-suited for cultivation in regions with cold winters. Mulching the root zone helps retain moisture and protects the root system from sudden temperature changes.
Picea omorika "Karel" looks impressive among decorative stones, along paths, in the foreground of coniferous groups, and in mixed compositions. It combines well with junipers, dwarf pines, thujas, barberries, and groundcover plants.
