Description

Ranunculus asiaticus "Aviv" yellow - is a compact variety of Asian buttercup with yellow rose-like blooms already at the end of spring — beginning of summer. This plant is still little known in horticulture, but much more common in pot culture. Its tubers have a very bizarre shape and are highly fragile. In one season, the plant forms several flower stalks, which open their buds alternately, extending the flowering period for several months.



After flowering, buttercups require a long dormant period. In a city apartment, it can simply be removed from the windowsill, and after drying, the stem can be cut. In open ground, the rhizome is dug up in autumn, trying to keep it as undamaged as possible, and after drying, it is sent to overwinter in the basement. In a flowerbed, the buttercup is given a place of honor in partial shade, where it reveals its potential, delighting with bright, juicy caps of buds and a longer flowering period. At the same time, the plant does not need frequent watering. However, infrequent potassium feedings will help increase the number of daughter tubers and enlarge the size of the buds.


Planting. Ranunculus (buttercup) grows in loose, fertile soils. The planting location is sun or light partial shade. In April, the tuber-cones are planted in open ground to a depth of 3–5 cm. The optimal distance between plants is 15 cm. Before planting, it is best to soak them in cold water for 2 hours. You can pre-plant the tubers in pots, and after the frosts, transplant the buttercups into open ground. Low-growing varieties are suitable for growing in pots.

Care. Ranunculus is a moisture-loving plant. It requires regular watering and feeding with complex fertilizers. It does not tolerate a strong drop in temperature. After the leaves die off, the tuber-cones are dug up, and in spring, they are planted back into the ground.
