Description
«Contorta» is a hazel with an expressive appearance, beautiful texture, and harmonious silhouette. Deciduous green foliage emphasizes the natural seasonal rhythm and creates a calm background for flowering or fruiting. Flowering occurs in spring and early summer; the main flower shade is «Yellow-brown catkins; reddish female flowers». As an adult plant, it usually reaches 3–5 m in height and about 3–5 m in width, so its future scale is easy to consider when planning planting.
To maintain the plant's neat shape and expressiveness, it is sufficient to provide it with a suitable location and consistent care. Optimal lighting — sun; a warm and, if possible, sheltered place. Soil — fertile, well-drained; slightly acidic–neutral. Watering — regular during rooting, flowering, and fruit development; without waterlogging. Frost resistance — very high, approximately up to −30 °C.
The variety is equally appropriate in decorative and practical plantings if its scale and growth habit are taken into account beforehand. Best use scenarios — fruit garden; compact/heat-loving crops — large container. The main advantages of «Contorta» — very high winter hardiness, suitability for container cultivation, the architectural silhouette of an adult plant, and versatility in garden compositions. To maintain its shape, it is sufficient to adhere to the following pruning scheme: formative and sanitary; timing and intensity depend on the crop and type of fruiting.
